Pop Music Video Analysis - Lorde - Tennis Court

This music video by Lorde is much different to most videos as there is only one shot throughout the song. 'Tennis Court' Opens with a fade in before we see the artist in centre shot. The mid-close up shot of Lorde is sustained through the whole video.

This video relies greatly on lighting and costume. We can see that the artist is wearing all black, including makeup. The background is also all black and this represents her emotion, or lack of emotion. It also suggests that there is a darker side to her.

Another thing we can notice about the video is her movement, despite having a singular shot Lorde blinks and moves her head to the beat of the song. This makes the video visually entertaining as her body movements are in sync with the song. For the majority of the song there is eye contact from the artist to the camera, this creates the impression that she is speaking/singing to the audience.

In this shot, she begins to cross her arms which could contrast the idea of her having a dart side. There is a mix of the dark representing evil and her body language which shows that she is innocent, or scared.









This idea is further emphasised by the switches between low and high key lighting throughout. As the video goes on, the difference in lighting could represent a clash between good and evil, or in some sense two different sides to the artist.
