Simon Firth - 1988

'Music videos can be characterized by 3 broad typologies:

  • Performance
  • Narrative
  • Conceptual
Performance:
Performance based music videos involve the artist literally performing the song to create a concert-like experience for fans.

An example of a performance music video is The Killers - Mr. Brightside

Narrative:
A narrative video focuses on the story of the song, its meaning and events. The most common type of narrative are love stories.

Taylor Swift is a good example of narrative music videos. Her song 'You Belong With Me' tells a typical story of unrequited love between two teenagers, but by the end of the song the girl wins the guy and it is all a happy ending.

Conceptual:
These videos are usually metaphorical to create different meanings and tones.

Adele - Chasing Pavements
